
What influenced your decision to set the novel in the near-future rather than the near-past? As I was drafting, I listened to a lot of the music I loved when I was a teen, which really helped me to remember that searching-for-belonging feeling I was immersed in at that age. Sarah Gailey: For most of the process of writing the book, I tried to connect to the person I was when I was young, queer, and felt completely doomed. Was there a routine in which you engaged to get into Esther’s voice?

Interstellar Flight Press: Upright Women Wanted has such a distinctive voice and stays close to the main character, Esther.
